The Indigenous Peoples’ Health Research Centre (IPHRC) is a collaboration between the First Nations University of Canada, the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan. IPHRC has also received broad support from various First Nations organizations including the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations (FSIN), the Northern Intertribal Health Authority (NITHA), Northern Health Boards with a majority Indigenous clients or control, as well as Regional Health Authorities.

IPHRC is funded by the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples Health (IAPH), one of the institutes of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), and the Saskatchewan Health Research Foundation (SHRF). Funding provided to IPHRC is primarily focused on building capacity in health research among Indigenous people through trainee support, and promoting research into areas of Indigenous health.

All projects undertaken by IPHRC shall be in cooperation with communities and will emphasize capacity building of Indigenous individuals, communities and institutions, and will require strict ethical provisions derived in consultation with the communities. IPHRC is designed to foster a research environment to increase Indigenous health research capacity and participate with other such centers to facilitate the development of Indigenous health research.

The objectives of this grant are to: 1) build community awareness and capacity with respect to health research, 2) provide support for Indigenous communities to develop and pursue their own research projects, research training, and research capacity building, and 3) support Indigenous leadership in research and respectful research partnerships.

Research Area: A call for proposals has been initiated by IPHRC to support one-time community-based research projects focusing on Indigenous health. In response to feedback expressing the need for such a program, the Community Network Partnership Research grant promotes the principles of OCAP (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession) and through direct community involvement, ensures that relevant and appropriate research is undertaken.

The intent of these funds is to support projects that demonstrate both research excellence and a clear benefit to Indigenous community health. Projects must demonstrate capacity development in Indigenous health. Proposals should also coincide with IPHRC’s key health research areas which include:

  • Health services and policy;
  • Complex interaction of factors that determine the health of populations;
  • Mental health and addictions;
  • Ethics and research governance, and;
  • Chronic disease

Eligibility: The program is open to communities, health regions and health researchers in Saskatchewan in collaboration with an academic partner. The contributions to the project of all partners should be clearly defined in the application materials as well as how this research will be of benefit to the community. Applicants must indicate a willingness to disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications/presentation and submit a final report of the project to IPHRC.

Funding: A maximum of $20,000 will be provided to support the research project. Funding may be used for a wide variety of services and projects, but should conform to CIHR guidelines (www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca). Ethics approvals must be obtained where necessary before funds are released.

Peer review: Peer Review: Application will be peer reviewed by the IPHRC peer review committee. The applications aligned with the research theme areas of IPHRC, the objectives of research excellence, capacity building and the standards as determined by peer review will be selected and approved by IPHRC.

Effective Date: The earliest commencement date for the awards is June 15. Awards must be taken up within 2 months of the date of offer and may commence on the 1st or 15th day of the month. Funds must be expended by November 30, 2011. Any funds not expended by this date must be returned to IPHRC.

Communications: The award recipients will be required to acknowledge the support of IPHRC in all written, oral and electronic presentations of their research. A summary of the research project must be submitted for the use of IPHRC in promoting the activities of IPHRC. Applicants must indicate how the results of the project will be communicated and promoted within the Indigenous community involved.
