GENERAL INFORMATION
The Indigenous Peoples' Health Research Centre (IPHRC) is a collaboration between the University of Regina, First Nations University of Canada and the University of Saskatchewan, with broad support from various health boards and Aboriginal health organizations. IPHRC is supported by the Institute of Aboriginal Peoples Health (IAPH), one of the institutes of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). Funding provided by IAPH to IPHRC is primarily focused on building capacity in health research among Aboriginal people through trainee support, and promoting research into areas of Aboriginal health for which five theme areas have been identified:
- Health services and policy
- Complex interaction of factors that determine the health of populations
- Mental health and addictions
- Ethics and research governance
- Chronic disease
Part of the IPHRC mandate involves the support of graduate students registered in degree programs in which a research thesis is a major component. Applications are invited from Aboriginal students whose graduate program is involved in any health discipline. The research projects of other applicants must coincide with the research interests of IPHRC. The selection of graduate students for these fellowships will be based upon the following criteria:
- Preference will be given to students of Aboriginal descent.
- Preference will be given to students whose research project coincides with the research themes of IPHRC. In respect to the four pillars of CIHR, these directions shall not usually include biomedical applications, and will explore only very relevant clinical applications. The emphasis will be on health research rather than medical research, and a community-based approach will be fostered and emphasized.
- Demonstrated academic achievement and research productivity.
